What is the CAE Exam?
Why should I do the CAE exam?
The Cambridge Advanced exam is accepted around the world as proof of high-level achievement in learning English. You can use it to apply for visas, university and job applications.
C1 Advanced is one of the Cambridge exams. Cambridge exams, unlike IELTS, do not have an expiry date.
What level is it?
The Cambridge advanced exam is C1 level.
If you get an A in the exam, you will recieve a C2 level on your certificate.
If you get a B or a C you will get a C1 level.
If you get a D (fail), you will be awarded a B2 level.
What do I have to do in the Cambridge Advanced exam?
The test has four sections:
- Reading & Use of English – 90 minutes (8 tasks)
- Writing– 90 minutes (2 tasks)
- Listening – 40 minutes (4 tasks)
- Speaking – 15 minutes (4 tasks)
Score
A, B, C (pass), D, E or U (fail)
Each part of the exam is 20% of your grade. You do not have to pass all sections of the exam to pass the CAE exam overall.
You need to score more than 180 points (60%) to pass the exam overall.
Marks:
200–210 = Grade A = C2
193–199 = Grade B = C1
180–192 = Grade C = C1
160–179 = Level B2
If your score is lower than 160, you will not receive a certificate, but your Cambridge English Scale score will be shown on your Statement of Results.
Paper-based or computer-based CAE exams?
You can do The C1 Advanced exam on a computer or on paper. Check with your local exam centre if they offer both types of exam.
When can I take the exam?
Check where you local test centre is. The CAE exam can usually be taken once a month. In some countries or smaller cities, it may be less. It is important to check with your local centre.
You must register for the exam in advance. Contact your local centre at least 1 month before you want to do the exam.
How much does it cost to take CAE?
The price varies between different countries and exam centres. On average you will pay about €215.
